The Black Classical Musicians Project

The Black Classical Musicians project aims to raise awareness of the people of African and Caribbean origin who have made significant contributions towards the western traditions of classical music in Europe for over 500 years.  A Black presence has existed within European societies for thousands of years.

The website opens a window onto the world of the Black classical musician, showing us the history, the music, and the problems which they had to overcome in order to pursue their love of classical music.  In the present day, there is new interest in music written by Black musicians from the past.  The Events page highlights concerts and activities inspired by this new interest, and the Marketplace offers goods and services of interest to all musicians.

Storytelling   History comes to life with historical stories about the lives of black musicians.  Storytellers can appear in costume, and let the musicians tell their own fascinating stories!  Suitable for children 7-11 years (Key Stage 2).

Discussion   An opportunity for young people to use their skills to discuss issues relating to the black musical experience.  Suitable for ages 11-14 years (Key Stage 3).

Education   The project assists and collaborates with local authorities, education and cultural interest groups as a resource when organising their own events.  Whether its for an interesting supplementary lesson for your school, or something new to add to a cultural event, the Black Classical Musicians project may have something different to offer.
