Black Classical Musicians Celebrate Black History Month

Black History Month is held in October every year in the UK.  All over the country local communities organise a variety of events to raise awareness and celebrate the significant contributions made by people of African and Caribbean origin to life in Britain today, as well as throughout our shared history.  These events have brought diverse communities together, and have helped to inspire as well as educate.

Black History Month originated in the United States by American editor Carter G Woodson in 1926.  He had the idea of a nationwide celebration of African-Caribbean history and culture, which takes place each year in the US in February.

As this significant time approaches, some of the many events taking place throughout the UK will be highlighted which celebrate the contributions of Black classical musicians past and present.

Let Black Classical Musicians celebrate with you this year:

Storytelling   History comes to life with historical stories about the lives of black musicians.  Storytellers can appear in costume, and let the musicians tell their own fascinating stories!  Suitable for children 7-11 years (Key Stage 2).

Discussion   An opportunity for young people to use their skills to discuss issues relating to the black musical experience.  Suitable for ages 11-14 years (Key Stage 3).

Education   The project assists and collaborates with local authorities, education and cultural interest groups as a resource when organising their own events.  Whether its for an interesting supplementary lesson for your school, or something new to add to a cultural event, the Black Classical Musicians project may have something different to offer.
